Just carry on as normal and let the cards fall where they may? Ultimately, I guess that might work out - for the majority of the poulation. Unless of course you were one of the people who died as a result of catching the Delta variant of Covid 19. Or unless the health system collapsed under the strain and you were part of the collateral damage - one of those who couldn't get urgent medical treatment because of that collapse.
I think it is fair to say that nobody really knows how serious the consequences of an unfettered outbreak might be, but I do think the government is right to do what they can to avoid it. Sure - it's inconvenient for most and downright difficult for some, but it is the right thing to do.
I drove into town today and was surprised by the amount of traffic on the road, and by the number of people who were out and about - not wearing masks. There were people walking maskless up and down Victoria Street. On the way home I realised I had forgotten to buy rubbish bags and so I went to the local dairy and was surprised again to find people walking in and out as if it were an ordinary day. I remember the last lock down and one wasn't allowed into the dairy until the last person had come out.
There have been a few stories in the news of certain individuals and groups disregarding the rules, no doubt because they resent the restrictions placed upon them. It reminds me of the time when my eldest son had just learnt to drive and was on a restricted licence, such that he was not permitted to carry passengers. He came and asked me if it would be all right with me if he gave a friend of his a lift 'just down the road'. My reply was that it would, of course, be absolutely fine with me but before leaving he should give the police a call to see if it was OK with them. He was not pleased, in fact he was properly fed up - with me! But his anger was mis-directed; I didn't make the rules. Imagine the absurdity of the situation were he stopped by the police with his friend in the car: 'Oh it's all right - I asked my dad and he said it was fine'.
Anyone who thinks they are getting one over on Silly Cindy by flouting the rules is missing the point. She didn't cause the problem, nature did. What caused nature to do it is another discussion - which is surely worth having, but not today. Right now, following the guidelines is the most sensible thing to do. So let's just get on with it, as all reasonable people are doing, and with a bit of luck it won't be for too long.
